Teaching Figurative Language Through Poetry

One of my favorite writing units comes at the beginning of the year for me.  How lucky am I?  Actually, I make it that way so I'm kind of creating my own luck ;)

I love poetry, music, and figurative language.  When you put all those together, what do you get?  MUSIC!



I created an activity that involves looking at song lyrics to find figurative language.  It focuses on hyperbole, similes, metaphors, and personifications.  You can check it out by clicking here.

    I just read your post on using music
    for practice in figurative language. I
    think that it's awesome to use music
    because it keeps the students engaged.
    I'd love to have them get into groups
    to brainstorm additional examples
    using songs (with careful parameters,
    of course!)

    Thanks for sharing. I like to use lyrics myself but usually do a whole group lesson and then have the students bring in the lyrics of their favorite song to analyze. I think this activity would help enhance the lessons!

    Dennise: I'm thinking I could have them bring in lyrics afterwards and screen them before having them present it to the class. Thanks for the idea!
